Proportional Representation under Single-Crossing Preferences Revisited

چکیده
We study the complexity of determining a winning committee under Chamberlin-Courant voting rule when voters' preferences are single-crossing on line, or, more generally, tree. For Skowron et al. (2015) describe an O(n^2mk) algorithm (where n, m, k number voters, candidates and size, respectively); we show that simple tweak improves time to O(nmk). then improve this bound for k=Ω(log n) by reducing our problem k-link path DAGs with concave Monge weights, obtaining nm2^O(√(log log n)) general case nearly linear Borda misrepresentation function. trees, point out issue proposed Clearwater, Puppe Slinko (2015), develop O(nmk) as well.

The Complexity of Fully Proportional Representation for Single-Crossing Electorates
We study the complexity of winner determination in single-crossing elections under two classic fully proportional representation rules—Chamberlin–Courant’s rule and Monroe’s rule. Winner determination for these rules is known to be NP-hard for unrestricted preferences. We show that for single-crossing preferences this problem admits a polynomial-time algorithm for Chamberlin–Courant’s rule, but...
متن کاملThe single crossing conditions for incomplete preferences
We study the implications of the single crossing conditions for preferences described by binary relations. All restrictions imposed on the preferences are satisfied in the case of approximate optimization of a bounded-above utility function. In the context of the choice of a single agent, the transitivity of strict preferences ensures that the best response correspondence is increasing in the s...
متن کاملOn party-proportional representation under district distortions
The paper presents the problem of choosing the representatives in an assembly when the whole electoral region is subdivided into electoral districts. Because of the two dimensions, geographical (districts) and political (parties), the problem is called bi-apportionment. Often the allocation of seats to districts is pre-determined and furthermore distorted —meaning that the ratios of the number ...
متن کاملBounded Single-Peaked Width and Proportional Representation
This paper is devoted to the proportional representation (PR) problem when the preferences are clustered single-peaked. PR is a “multi-winner” election problem, that we study in Chamberlin and Courant’s scheme [6]. We define clustered single-peakedness as a form of single-peakedness with respect to clusters of candidates, i.e. subsets of candidates that are consecutive (in arbitrary order) in t...
متن کاملConference Program Design with Single-Peaked and Single-Crossing Preferences
We consider the Conference Program Design (CPD) problem, a multi-round generalization of (the maximization versions of) q-Facility Location and the Chamberlin-Courant multi-winner election, introduced by (Caragiannis, Gourvès and Monnot, IJCAI 2016). CPD asks for the selection of kq different items and their assignment to k disjoint sets of size q each. The agents derive utility only from their...
